Cedar City has a source designated as Under the Direct Influence of Surface Water. The Division of Drinking Water has designated a source that is used by this water system as Under the Direct Influence (UDI) of surface water. Because of the surface water influence to this source, there is an increased chance that the water may contain disease-causing organisms.
What happened? What is being done? The Cedar Canyon Springs has become under the direct influence of surface water. Water from this source services the South East side of Cedar and the Fiddlers area. We are working with the State of Utah Division of Drinking Water and a professional engineer on plans to install a treatment plant. In the meantime, we have the approval to operate the disinfection facilities to achieve a 3-Log inactivation of Giardia lamblia per State and Federal requirements. Final construction and operating permit for a permanent solution need to be obtained within 18 months. What should I do? - No additional action is needed – no boiling is required.
- Sources under the direct influence of surface water may contain disease-causing organisms. These organisms include bacteria, viruses, and parasites, which can cause symptoms such as nausea, cramps, diarrhea, and associated headaches. People with severely compromised immune systems, infants, and some elderly may be at increased risk. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers.
- The symptoms above are not caused only by organisms in drinking water. If you experience any of these symptoms and they persist, you may want to seek medical advice.
We will inform you when we are no longer chlorinating at the level for 3-Log inactivation of Giardia lamblia. For more information, please contact Robbie Mitchell at 435-865-4507 or email mrobbie@cedarcityut.gov. General guidelines on ways to lessen the risk of infection by microbes are available from the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1(800) 426-4791. Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail This notice is being sent to you by Cedar City Corporation
