Iron County is home to Southern Utah University (SUU) and Southwest Technical College. In addition to the institutions in Iron County, Utah is home to a total of nine universities and a number of private institutions including University of Utah, Brigham Young University, Westminster College, Neumont University and LDS Business College.

Southern Utah University was established in 1897 and has a current enrollment of about 8,900. SUU has developed into a comprehensive, regional university offering graduate, baccalaureate, associate and technical programs. People in the area look to the university for skill development opportunities, major academic specialties, outreach services, cultural and athletic activities and economic and business development. Additionally, SUU has been known to develop curriculums that are tailored to specific businesses here in Cedar City, allowing for students to get the proper training and skills that will propel them into a career at your business.

Southwest Technical College is part of the Utah College of Applied Technology (UCAT) colleges. Created by Utah Legislature in 2001 as one of Utah’s public institutions of higher education, UCAT consists of eight regional applied technology campuses. Southwest Tech serves Beaver, Iron, Garfield and Kane Counties and has an enrollment of 2,400 with programs in automotive, business technology, health science, solar, information technology and trades and industry.

In 2014, construction began on Southwest Tech's $19 million Allied Health and Technology Center, which has increased the school's footprint in the community bringing many new and improved programs to the campus. Southwest Tech works closely with the Cedar City - Iron County Office of Economic Development, providing Custom-Fit training programs and other incentives to local companies and those looking to expand or relocate here.
