The Dixie National
Forest occupies almost two million acres, and stretches for about
170 miles across southern Utah. The largest national forest in Utah,
it straddles the divide between the Great Basin and the Colorado
River. Elevations vary from 2,800 feet near St. George to
11,322 feet at Bluebell Knoll on the Boulder Mountain. The southern
rim of the Great Basin provides spectacular scenery, and the
Colorado River canyons break away in many colored cliffs and steep
wall gorges. Important wildlife species include mule deer,
elk, antelope, mountain lion, turkey, black bear, grouse and rabbit.
Many species of birds, reptiles and raptors are also present. There
are approximately 3,019 surface acres of fishing waters in lakes and
reservoirs and 224 miles of stream fisheries in the forest.
Significant recreation activities in the forest include camping,
picnicking, hiking, backpacking, hunting, fishing, boating,
swimming, rock hounding, snowmobiling and skiing.
